about

Hi! So I wrote and recorded a lot of music for the album Head Fell Between Two Horses. A bunch of it got cut or rewritten, and I thought it might be nice to make a kind of addendum out of that material.

“Two Horses” was the almost-title track and was cut pretty late in the process. I worried that the amount of negative space and the patience it demanded would be a momentum-killer. It’s a pretty good illustration of what I love most about pianos, and it’s probably the prettiest thing I’ll ever make.

“Quit” started its life as a pretty minimal noise song. This is the song in its original form before I rewrote it as a piano ballad because I didn’t want any full-on yelling on the album.

“Five Words Ambient” is made from one of the choir-piles that show up throughout the album.

I recorded a bunch of no-input mixer noise for “Cornered By.” It wound up getting buried during mixing, but I spent a lot of time listening to it by itself, so here it is.

At one point, I thought “Hospital Cop 1” was great. Then I decided it was the most dead-stupid Ben Folds Five-ass pop song ever written. I replaced it with “Hospital Cop 2,” so called because it borrows a few lyrics from this song. Giving "1" a bit of a blown-out mix made me like it more, but I have no concept of its quality at this point.

“Nerve Control Ambient” is made out of all the unused overdubs I recorded for “Nerve Control.”

The first drum track I recorded for “White Hot Cath’lic Lesion” was inadvisably fast and wasn’t played to a click. “Fast Cath’lic” uses that drum track as an excuse to make a sillier, looser version of that song, to strip it down to its basic elements. It’s still a ridiculous wedding cake of a song, even without all of the literal bells and whistles, and this seemed like a good excuse to attempt something fun out of an album that contains so few (zero?) fun moments.

Anyhoo, thanks for listening. Head Fell Between Two Horses was sad and draining and difficult to make, and I’m excited to not think about it for the foreseeable future. Thank you again.
